Twitter: No More Tweets

If anyone noticed, I had a Twitter sidebar on this site.  I’ve taken it down.  This twitter shall tweet no more.  Huh?  Well…read on and it’ll make sense!

For some, the ability to send real-time instant messages isn’t enough, and they’ll use Twitter to send short one-liners to anyone who is subscribed to their username.  I had tried it for awhile but ultimately, it grew to be an annoyance.  I was using it to broadcast messages about updates to this site, and a few other random tidbits which I could quickly send out without needing to log in and prepare a formal message here.  I wasn’t the type to tell the world I’d just gotten into the car and had started on my trip home, which illustrates a typical use of Twitter.  As it can be used from some text-ready cell phones and other wireless devices, it made no sense for me as I had to be near a computer to do any kind of messaging.

What led me to ultimately deactivate both of my accounts, other than my forgetting which one was my active account, was that Twitter disabled the use of my Gtalk instant messenger to send and receieve tweets.  I wasn’t about to run a separate application–I have enough running already.  Not only that, spammers were starting a dictionary attack, signing up accounts and trying to join anything they could.  Getting a couple of e-mail notices a day for a member with a name like “sxrienw23” trying to track me was annoying to say the least.

Twitter may be for some, but not for me.  I’d like something similar to post quick notices here, but it may be something I have to brew up on my own.
